Effect of Light on the Biosynthesis of Anthocyanin in Brassica oleracea var. capitata f. rubra L.

Abstract
The experiment was carried out to determine the effect of light on the anthocyanin synthesis and expression of CHS, CHI and DFR in Brassica oleracea var. capitata f. rubra L. The major pigment of the red leaves in Brassica oleracea var. capitata f. rubra L. was identified as cyanidin a kind of anthocyanin by TLC and HPLC analysis. As for light intensity, anthocyanin development was inhibited by 90%, 80% and 55% shading in this order. Shading above 80% inhibited greatly the anthocyanin development. The expression level of the genes was highest in DFR, followed by CHS and CHI. Particularly, the expression levels of the CHS and CHI were decreased in accordance with a decline of light intensity proportionately. But the expression level of the DFR was not shown in proportion to the light intensity. These results lead to the conclusion that the regulation of anthocyanin synthesis by the light might occur at the transcriptional level.
